This image is a composite of three photographs. The original shot of the tree seen below the final version is obviously flawed because the background is very unattractive. I spotted this front yard on my way to the post office last Spring. I loved the tree, but I knew this would take quite a bit of work in Photoshop to replace the background and make this look really good.
The technique I used to separate the myriad branches from the sky was the background eraser tool. It hides beneath the eraser tool, and it is excellent at enabling you to insert any kind of background behind trees and other types of foliage. It helps, of course, if the sky is fairly monochromatic.
In addition to replacing the background, I also cloned tulips from a third picture to cover up that dirt pile. With two photos open on your desktop, you can clone from one picture to another using the same cloning technique that you normally use. Then I used hue/saturation to add more life to the colors.
