When I first got into digital a few years ago, one of the first filters I applied in the field was the Singh Ray Gold/Blue polarizer. It was very disappointing. All of the images on which the filter was applied had an unacceptable rose color cast and the Gold/Blue filter effect that I loved so much with film seemed a casualty of the digital transition.
During a phone call with Dr. Singh the other day, the Gold/Blue issue came up, and I mentioned to Bob that there was a very strange color cast and that the Gold/Blue may have to be redesigned to work as it did with film. His response was, “Did you try to adjust the Kelvin temperature to 3600K?”
I hadn’t. I didn’t know what to do, and being new to digital at the time didn’t know of any software “tricks” to correct the problem.
The blog image was re-processed in RAW, adjusting the kelvin temperature to 3600K and it looks like film to me, or certainly close enough to put the filter back in my filter pouch!
(The exact Kelvin temperature will vary depending on the image, but it’s in the low [blue]range in general)
