One of the ways we have of making a powerful visual statement is with bold color. The impact that color has on a photo cannot be over stated. Certain colors complement each other, such as the well-known ‘complementary colors’: blue/yellow, red/cyan, and green/magenta. Other color combinations are so visually arresting that they make any one sit up and take notice. For example, yellow and purple, or cyan and green.
The picture below was taken last year during carnival in Venice, Italy. Orange and black – the Halloween colors – are definitely in the category of visual shock value, and when you throw in an exotic mask and a wild costume, the result has to be outrageous. This picture is un-retouched except for removing a clothesline. I used my 16-35mm wide angle for the exaggerated perspective you see. In my Developing Your Own Artistic Vision course here at Betterphoto.com, I go into color combinations in depth because it's one of the ways we have to truly create photographs with tremendous impact.
