One of the best things about carrying a camera with me is the excuse it allows me to to meet and talk with people, if even for a few moments. The camera provides me the excuse of getting past my own shyness to begin a conversation.
Whether I make an image or not, I always appreciate these moments to be able to engage someone else. So much about life can be fueled by isolation, and I am so grateful that I have the camera that serves as my greatest tool to step outside of myself and simply say, "hello".
I love many of the images that I've produced as a result. But I am especially grateful for the memories that I've developed around these images - including this photo of Mary. I met her in Oakland while waiting for the train for my return to Los Angeles.
I'm glad that I have this image of Mary to remember her by.
